Once you have been into capsule toys for a while, you start recognising each maker's style before you read the label. Just like a film buff can spot a director from a single shot, a gacha addict knows that shiba dogs stuck in a tyre can only be Qualia. Here is the cheat sheet so you can show off too.

Bandai, where it all began

The inventor of the modern machine and owner of the registered Gashapon trademark. They have been making capsules since the 1970s and it shows: sculpt and paint quality well above the price tag, plus all the big anime licences (One Piece, Kirby, Pokemon and friends). If the poster says Bandai, it rarely disappoints.

Takara Tomy A.R.T.S, the other giant

Forever second in size, never in quality. Very strong in virtual pets, miniature food and animal series with that absurd Japanese touch we cannot resist.

Qualia, kings of the lovable absurd

A small maker with more ideas per square metre than anyone. They are behind the shibas stuck in things, the buff rabbits pounding mochi and the ghosts being inspected by cats. If a series makes you laugh out loud mid-scroll, bet on Qualia.

Yell, cuteness in capsule doses

Specialists in round-eyed little animals and tiny plushies that should not cost as little as they do. Less absurd than Qualia, more of a straight shot to the heart. Their farm animal series with the big eyes is a house classic.

Re-Ment, the watchmakers of miniatures

Technically they make blind boxes, not capsules, but nobody beats them on detail: full kitchens, terrariums like the Pikmin ones, hyper-realistic scale food. These are the figures people photograph up close to show off their macro lens.

Toys Cabin and SO-TA, the quiet craftsmen

Two mid-sized makers that every now and then release the most talked-about series of the month: preschool cats, miniature motorbike helmets, things you did not know you needed until you saw them. Worth keeping an eye on.

POP MART, the craze that came from China

The blind box giant, responsible for half the planet knowing what a Labubu is. Molly, Skullpanda, Hirono, Crybaby... designer characters with editions that sell out in hours. A different vibe from Japanese gachapon, but the same surprise mechanic that gets us all.
